REDUNDANT VFD SOLUTION

STEAM AND CONDENSATE SYSTEM FOR PAPER MACHINE


The objective of the steam and condensate system in the paper machine is to provide the steam for the drying. In the dryer part the moisture is evaporated as the paper is pressed between a felt and the hot drying cylinder.

The steam and condensate system is a part of a paper machine. Past the press section, the paper sheet has a water content of about 60 %. The final drying is achieved in the drying section. This is achieved by means of several steam heated dryers (cylinders). These are driven in groups of few together. The paper sheet runs over a large number of dryers. The temperature of each of the dryer surfaces must be exactly controlled. In the first group this might be 70 °C (160 °F) and rise then slowly to 105 °C (220 °F) in the later groups at the dry end.

EOT Grab Crane

The most common but very challenging type of overhead crane electrically operated found in many industries for material handling. Many old systems had limitations like, maintaining differential gear, slip-ring motor and mechanical brakes. Also the maintenance is extremely expensive and time consuming.

Amtech offers solutions for EOT(Electric Overhead Traveling) crane having grab unit for material handling like coal, gypsum, sand, limestone, clinker etc. One such solutions in Cement Industry is for 6 tone capacity EOT Cranes located at 35 feet above ground level, cross traveling 70 feet and long traveling 330 feet. Crane controller with high resolution encoder used to monitor and synchronize grab/hoist and smooth start/stop. This resulted in smooth operation, reduced maintenance of brakes, precise closing of grab, increased productivity and energy saving.

Kiln Application

Currently, in most of the kiln applications in steel / cement industry, DC motors and drives are used due to their excellent torque speed attributes, but the maintenance of dc motor is a big task. One of our customer replaced DC Motor and Drive with similar capacity AC Motor and VFD to run the kiln, but could not increase the speed of kiln beyond 3 rpm due to insufficient power/torque at low speed and gear ratio mismatch.

Amtech, installed additional auxiliary AC Motor and VFD with controller which is used for load sharing between two VFDs. Speed of kiln increased to the desired speed of 4 RPM, resulting in higher productivity. Smooth speed control of kiln achieved through two VFDs and motors of different ratings. Cement Industry – Save energy in Kiln Application

The new generation of control system, developed by Amtech Electronics (India) Ltd, integrated the operation of Kiln application in cement industries along with variable frequency drive and control.


For the kiln application, DC motor and drive are used due to their excellent torque speed characteristics, but the maintenance of DC motor is a big issue. Customer replaced DC motor and drive with 220 kW, 415 V AC Motor and VFD to run the kiln. Still, they were not able to increase the speed of kiln.

Limitations of previous system :
  • The speed of kiln was not possible to be increased beyond 3 RPM

NEXT GENERATION IN SUGAR INDUSTRY

The new generation of control and monitoring system, developed by Amtech Electronics (India) Ltd, integrates the operation of Feeder table & ACFC (Auto Cane Feeding Control) Automation by using variable frequency drive and Automation system with instrumentation for controlling and monitoring.

Operation of Feeder table & ACFC Automation by using variable frequency drive :

Cane Preparation requires automation of feeder table, cane carrier, knife & mill operation. Raw canes are unloaded on feeder table through can unloader. Level sensor senses the level of cane accumulated. Control system controls the speed of feeder table, cane carrier 1 and 2 based on the Chute level, feeder table level and cutter load. The canes are thoroughly cleaned and cut into small pieces. These cane pieces are dropped over a continuous belt of steel plates called the cane carrier, moving over roller chains. From the cane carrier, these are conveyed to a crusher fitted with a set of revolving knives, and cut into very small pieces. These small pieces in the form of a compact blanket are passed through two roller crushers and four mills.

Amtech Electronics in Cement Industry : Grabbing Crane Modernization

The new generation of control and monitoring system, developed by Amtech Electronics (India) Ltd, integrates the operation of EOT crane with four rope grabe by using variable frequency drive, Crane controller for controlling and monitoring.

Grabing crane used to handle the powder material, having four rope which operates hoisting and grabing operation.Synchronization of this operation was carried out by differential gearbox. Being mechanical synchronization, it prones to backlash and takes lot of time to re-synchronize. Amtech has developed and successfully installed automation system for the grabbing crane. Automation system control the synchronization and whole crane operation like Cross Travel, Long Travel, Hoisting, Grabbing and safety interlocks. Automation system is using properly sized variable frequency drive for existing slip ring motor or new induction motor to control the all operation. PLC system take cares of Speed control, Thruster control, Synchronization and Various interlocks.


Grab crane is a type of crane used in Cement, Metal industry, Ports etc. for handling of material in powder form. The grab mechanism is just like two jaws hinged at mid-point, used to grab the material. This mechanism can be operated by either hydraulic or electrical system. In Hydraulic system the grab jaws are operated by hydraulic cylinders. In case of electrical system, there are two rope & drum assemblies on the crab trolley. The grab operation gets carried out by one of the rope & drum assembly used to hoist the grab which in turn, gets driven by electrical motor. The motors get controlled by drive to allow multiple speed operations.

Frequent Problems in grabbing cranes are:
  • The original system in grab control uses a differential limit switch to get open/close positions & these positions cannot be changed. As this system is purely mechanical, setting the position is a tedious process The position of the switch can get disturbed over multiple operations & to be re-set again.
  • Power & Rotor resistance contactors often required to change due to frequent operations.
  • Slip-ring, carbon brushes maintenance.
  • Arching, bigger size and bulkiness of motor puts extra load on trolley and bridge.
  • Frequent problems in slip ring motors due to single phasing.
  • Burning of resister box.
  • Regular maintenance of current carrying contacts of contactor due to frequent braking and reversal involved.
  • Motor & Gear box coupling bolts damages & respectively motor & gearbox damage due to jerky operations.
  • Hoist & Grab wire rope broken out due to uneven load sharing.
  • Poor life of brake shoe as brakes was used for braking the speed.
