Amtech Electronics provide One stop solution for Power Quality

"Your One stop solution for Power Quality"

The use of sophisticated electronics equipment like Computers, DC Drives, Variable Frequency Drives, Thyristorised Heater Controllers, UPS, Switch Mode Power Supplies etc is increasing day by day in the industry.

These are non-linear loads and are responsible for harmonics generation. They draw non-sinusoidal current from the mains as compared to the linear loads like Incandescent lamps, Heating loads and Induction motor loads. They pose a big challenge for power quality.

The influence of the harmonics is not known to many and so this is neglected for quite some time. But they are responsible for,

  • Overheating, burnout or generation of vibration and beat noise in capacitors, reactors, generators and transformers
  • Overheating of neutral lines in 3-phase, 4-wire systems
  • Responsible for malfunction of control circuits of rectifier controllers
  • Nuisance tripping of protection relays and circuit breakers
  • Disturbance in communication lines and audio equipment
  • Deteriorate the computer performance
  • Error in watt-hour meter

It is customer’s responsibility to maintaining current distortion within the acceptable levels (Std. IEEE-519), while the utility is responsible for limiting voltage distortion.

Amtech offeres a range of products and services for the power quality improvement, energy conservation, enhanced operational efficiency and reliability improvement.

Amtech Services:

  • Harmonic audit and solutions to comply with global standards IEEE-519:2014, G5/4-1, GB/T 14549, IEC 61000-3-2, IEC 61000-3-4
  • System design, optimization and pay-back analysis
  • Consultancy for power quality improvement
  • Installation and commissioning of harmonic filters
  • Training in power quality and energy management
  • Energy audit and solutions by experienced BEE certified professionals

The Axpert – Passive Harmonic Filter System is designed to suit the industrial applications for harmonic filtering. Harmonics are generated by non-linear loads connected across the line. Harmonics cause nuisance tripping of electronics devices and circuit breakers, program corruption or malfunction of PLCs,extensive heating of cables, busbars, transformers and motors.

Passive Harmonic Filters are tuned to the Harmonic frequencies to divert the harmonic frequency currents generated due to non-linear roads away from the power source.

Dynamic Voltage Compensators monitor and control voltage to sensitive equipment connected across the power grid. Often sensitive equipment such as induction motors industrial PCs, DCS etc. Malfunctions whenever there is a voltage sag or swell of 50% or more around its nominal value. This malfunctioning can lead to loss of production, waste of raw material and man-hours. Such voltage disturbances last for short periods often less than 10 to 15 cycles. In such cases a UPS becomes bulky and uneconomical solution. Servo stabilizers cannot give fast and sufficient correction. Other equipment such as transformers, tap changes, and line voltage conditioners do not have fast enough response and required power capacity. Hence under these conditions a Dynamic Voltage Compensator (DVC) is the only solution.

Harmonic Mitigation By Active harmonic Filter

Improve electric power quality and reduce energy losses due to Harmonics. Detailed studies were carried out and the effects of poor power quality specially harmonics were analyzed on the productivity and energy consumption. Harmonic current generated by nonlinear loads like motors driven by Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) cause power system heating and add to user power bills. The harmonic related losses are present in the power cables, bus bars linking the loads with source, the power transformer itself. A more serious effect of harmonic loads served by transformer is due to an increase in winding eddy current losses. The heat generated due to harmonics must be removed in order to save electrical energy, thus leading to savings in the utility bill. Acase study where a 2.0 MVAtransformer used for powering the plant. The current harmonics is recorded with & without using the Active harmonic filter (AHF). The power parameters are recorded on side of transformer to demonstrate how the active harmonic filter can reduce the effects of harmonics and save energy.

Amtech Electronic provided Active Harmonic Filter Solution and Energy Saving in various Industries, as you can also see in the below given application case study.

Previous System :
  • Plant was running with so many non linear loads like VFDs, UPS, Computers etc...
  • No any Harmonic Mitigation solution installed in plant.
  • Current Harmonics (THD-I) was observed around 24 - 25% at TR-4 incomer, which is much higher than the limit of 8.00% as per IEEE 519 – 1992 standards.
  • Voltage Harmonics (THD-V) was observed around 2.2 – 2.5% at TR-4 incomer, which is well within the limit of 5.00% as per IEEE 519 – 1992 standards.
  • PF Capacitors are not magnifying the Harmonics as they are detuned with 7.0 % series reactor.

Problems Observed :
  • Capacitor over heating and failures.
  • Cable heating which lead to insulation breakdown.
  • Transformer heating, equipments heating, motor heating.
  • Random fuse blowing, relay tripping, breaker tripping.
  • Limits on generator & UPS capacity

Present System :

Axpert-i-sine Active Harmonic Filter of 100 AMP(3P3W, 415 Volts) installed at LTside of TR-4.

Previous System (Without AHF) :
Current Harmonics (THD-I) : 24 – 25 % and Voltage Harmonics (THD-V) : 7 – 8 %

Present System (With AHF) :
        Current Harmonics (THD-I) : 2.0 – 2.5 %  and Voltage Harmonics (THD-V) : 1.5 – 2.0 %

Merits of New System :
  • Capacitor over heating and failures avoided.
  • Random Fuse blowing, relay tripping, breaker tripping avoided.
  • Transformer heating, equipment heating, cable heating avoided.
  • Contactor burnt out avoided.

Other benefits (Savings) include :
  • Reduced energy usage (kWH) and reduction in demand (kVA).
  • Reactive power (kVAR) and Apparent power (kVA) saving.
  • Improved PF and voltage quality.
  • Reduction in I2R losses in conductor.
  • Reduction in equipments losses (motors, transformers etc..)
  • Electrical equipment life and performance increased.
  • Protection of sensitive electronic equipments
  • Operating cost reduction.
  • Reduced maintenance, decrease consumption of spare parts.
  • Better capacity utilization of transformers and generators.
